Installing Photoshop Actions

Installing Photoshop Actions
I have received a lot emails in regards to installing Photoshop Actions, my apologies for not being able to get back to everyone right away on this matter. Here are the instructions in more detail for those having difficulty getting actions to work.

Installing Actions in Photoshop

There are many ways to install actions, you can simply load actions from the actions palette menu, double click on the .atn file or drag and drop the file into Photoshop. In my opinion this way is much faster and I would suggest installing it this way first. If you hit a wall and find that none of the methods above work for you then you’ll need to do it manually, meaning you must locate the correct folder and paste the file in there.

The Presets folder contains all the folders for add-on Photoshop downloads such as Brushes, Gradients and so on. The path for these folders is as shown below:

For Windows users:

C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop (Your Version)\Presets\ (Actions, Brushes, Gradients, Shapes etc.)

For Mac OS X users:

/Users/username/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop  (Your Version)/Presets/(Actions, Brushes, Gradients, Shapes etc.)

Path in Photoshop Elements

For Windows users:

C:\Program Files\Adobe\ Photoshop Elements\ (Your Version)\ Photo Creations\ Photo Effects

For Mac OS X users:

/Users/username/Library/Application Support/Adobe/ Photoshop Elements/(Your Version)/ Photo Creations/ Photo Effects

Path in Photoshop Elements 4

For Windows users:

C:\Program Files\Adobe\ Photoshop Elements\ Photoshop Elements 4.0\ Previews\ Effects\ Image Effects

For Mac OS X users:

/Users/username/Library/Application Support/Adobe/ Photoshop Elements/Photoshop Elements 4.0/Previews/Effects/ Image Effects

More Examples

If you have downloaded a Brush for example which is an .abr file, then you would need to grab that file and place it in the Brushes folder which is located in Presets.  The same goes with Actions, Gradients, Shapes and so on.

Brushes = .abr extension, which need to be placed in the Brushes folder in Presets.
Gradients = .grd extension, which need to be placed in the Gradients folder in Presets.
Patterns = .pat extension, which need to be placed in the Patterns folder in Presets.
Shapes = .chs extension, which need to be placed in the Shapes folder in Presets.
Actions = .atn extension, which need to be placed in the Actions folder in Presets.

What is a .Zip File?

Most of our Photoshop Downloads are Zip files which are compressed and need to be extracted. To do this you will need to download software to unzip these files. You can find free software to extract these files easily by doing a Google search, I recommend WinRAR for window users.

Still Not Working?

If you have Photoshop opened while installing these Photoshop add-on’s it’s probably a good idea to close it and re-open the program, think of it as refreshing it.

Another question I’ve been asked is if the actions work in older versions or newer versions of Photoshop. To be honest they have not been tested in every version but if the program you use is Photoshop, then I would assume it will work. The thing with actions is there’s so many ways of getting them to work, if you can’t get it working the first time try some of the other ways I have mentioned in this post.
